Microenterprise
An Alternative Self-Employment Solution for Persons with Disabilities
Adults with various disabilities face chronic unemployment (60-70%) compared to job seekers without disabilities. The current economic landscape in California creates even more challenges for individuals with disabilities who desire to be a part of their community through paid employment.
Offering Microenterprise/Self-Employment options to participants and small groups when traditional job placement and wage employment may not be viable is just another way Employment & Community Options can meet the needs of people with disabilities.
The purpose of a Microenterprise service model is to develop a small business service which creates an opportunity for participants to work and control their own futures within the community. This type of service model allows participants the opportunity to become self-employed and to play an active role in the business decisions. Thus, allowing them to control their own future in terms of paid employment such as the ability to schedule work days to accommodate productivity levels, goals, symptom cycles, and schedules that match their personal needs and abilities.
For more information on Microenterprise services contact Wendy Forkas, Chief Operating Officer, at wforkas@communityoptions.org.
